Eighth-grade boys, seventh-grade girls win meet

In its final home meet of the season, the Louisburg Middle School track and field teams put together a strong performance.

The LMS eighth-grade boys and seventh-grade girls each took first in the team standings Tuesday when they hosted Baldwin and Trail Ridge (Gardner).  The eighth-grade boys tallied 67 points to edge runner-up Baldwin by three points, while the seventh-grade girls scored 74 points to beat Baldwin by 11.

For the third straight meet a school record fell, this time it was on the boys side. The eighth-grade 4×200-meter relay of Brandon Cooper, Noah Hill, Eli Minster and Gabe Rader won in 1 minute and 46.68 seconds to set the new record.

The relay was one of five events the Wildcat eighth-graders won. Cooper won the 100-meter dash in 12 seconds and Jon Ventre captured the crown in the 100 hurdles in 17.84 seconds.

Tanner Belcher crossed the finish line first in the 3,200-meter run in 11:53, and in the field events, Ian Combs won the pole vault for the third straight meet after he cleared 10 feet.

As for the seventh-grade girls, the Lady Cats won a team-high nine events to help separate themselves from Baldwin. Trinity Moore and Mackenzie Scholtz each won two events to lead Louisburg.

Moore ran away with both distance races. She captured the 1,600-meter run in 6:17 and later won the 800 in 2:47.

Scholtz sped her way to her two gold medals. She won the 100 dash in 13.99 seconds and later took the 200 in 28.87 seconds a week after breaking a school record in the event.

Also on the track, the 4×200 relay team also finished first in 2:09.56.

The Lady Cats also won four gold medals in the field events. Haley Cain won the high jump after she cleared 4-4 and Avery Graham won the pole vault after she cleared the bar at 6-0.

In the throws, Gabby Tappan won the shot put with a toss of 28-6 and Lauren Vincent won the discus with a throw of 64-7.

The seventh-grade boys team, which scored 42 points to finish third, won three events and two came from Charlie Koontz. In the 200 dash, Koontz won in 27.68 seconds and earlier won the high jump after he cleared 4-6.

Brayden White won the shot put for the second week in a row with a toss of 31-1.5 to win by more than two feet.

Louisburg’s eighth-grade girls recorded 34 points on the day and won two events. Shaylor Whitham won the 3,200-meter run in 14:31 and Ryann Kramer won the discus with a toss of 82-2.
