Louisburg’s (from left) Sam Frederick, Derek Frederick, Josh Holtzen, Garrison Bloustine and Matt Stohs finished second at the Cyclone Invitational on May 5.
OTTAWA — After a tough couple of weeks, the Louisburg golf team put together its best showing of the season on May 5 at the Cyclone Invitational.
The Wildcats shot its best team score of the season at the Great Life and Fitness course in Ottawa as they recorded a 319 to finish runner-up in the 9-team tournament.
On top of that, junior Matt Stohs and senior Sam Frederick each earned individual medals as they finished in the top 10. All five Wildcats golfers shot under 90 for the first time this season.
“It was good to see them all shoot so well,” Louisburg coach Brian Burns said. “They all played to their potential and didn’t give up or get discouraged.”
Stohs had his best round of the season as he carded a 76 to finish fifth overall. Frederick was right behind him with a 78 and medaled sixth.
Junior Derek Frederick just missed a medal as he finished in a tie for 10th win an 80, but lost out on the tiebreaker.
Senior Josh Holtzen carded an 85, which was good for a tie for 17th. Senior Garrison Bloustine finished with an 88 and took 24th.
Ottawa won the team title with a 311, while Paola’s Stratton Draper captured the individual crown with a 70.
Louisburg is back in action on May 13 as the Wildcats travel to the Anderson County Invitational at Garnett Country Club. Tee time is set for 1 p.m.
Wildcats roll KC-Washington in home victory
Louisburg senior Luke Schultz gets a base hit during a game earlier this season. Schultz broke the school record for doubles in a season during the Wildcats’ home game against KC-Washington on May 9 at Lewis-Young Park.
It was just another day at the office for Louisburg junior Bristol Barbour as he made another big impact on the mound, and at the plate, for the Louisburg baseball team.
For the second time in less than a week, Barbour got the win on the mound and homered — this time it was against KC-Washington. The Wildcats scored early and often as they cruised to a 16-0 win.
Barbour pitched the three innings and struck out six. However, he made a bigger impact at the plate as he hit a home run, doubled twice and had 6 RBIs.
Louisburg scored 11 runs in the first inning and never looked back in the 3-inning victory. It also improved the Wildcats’ record to 16-5 on the season.
“The guys came out and did a great job jumping on them early,” Louisburg coach Kade Larson said. “Bristol hit it well and pitched well. He has been seeing the ball well as of late and the team feeds off that energy.”
Wildcats senior Rylan Carty also had a big day at the plate with two hits and 3 RBIs, while sophomore Max Amren also finished with two hits.
Luke Schultz made program history with one of his three hits on the night. The Louisburg senior recorded his 14th double of the year, which broke the old record for doubles in a season that was held by his coach — Larson.
“Luke is a great hitter,” Larson said. “It was awesome to see him break that record. I’ve told him, and others, I want to see them break every record we have, because that means we are probably doing pretty well as a team. Hopefully he continues extending the lead he now has throughout the rest of the season.”
The Wildcats will try and end their season strong as they host Paola on May 13 for a doubleheader. Every win counts for Louisburg as it tries to secure a top 4 seed to host the regional tournament.
It is also Senior Night for the Wildcats as they prepare to honor their six seniors. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
Wildcats settle for split at Eudora
Louisburg was hoping to leave Eudora with a pair of wins following their doubleheader on May 6.
It started out well as senior Meade Rutherford pitched a complete game shutout and led the Wildcats to a 9-0 victory over the Cardinals.
In the second game, despite getting off to a strong start, the Wildcats couldn’t hang on in a 5-4 loss.
“It wasn’t what we wanted leaving Eudora,” coach Larson said. “We had our chances for a sweep, but a couple mistakes cost us. We had a good first inning and then couldn’t find a rhythm at the plate to get much going.”
Rutherford shut down the Cardinals’ offense in the first game as he allowed just two hits over seven innings and struck out nine.
“Meade threw really well in game one,” Larson said. “He threw a lot of strikes and let his defense work behind him.”
Louisburg scored five runs in the third inning, which as more than enough for Rutherford. Senior Jayce Toms led the Wildcat offense with a double and a triple, while senior Rylan Carty and junior Bristol Barbour each had 2 RBIs.
In the nightcap, Louisburg jumped on Eudora for four runs in the first innings and took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth, where Eudora scored three runs.
Wildcat senior Alex Saad had another strong start for Louisburg as he allowed just one earned run in 4 2/3 innings and struck out nine. Christian Owens came in for relief and struck out three of the four batters he faced.
“Saad and Owens both pitched really well, too,” Larson said. “Saad has really done a great job pitching to contact this year and then knowing when to mix it up to get strikeouts, too.”
Junior Evan Moreland had 2 RBIs to lead Louisburg, while Rutherford and Toms each had a run batted in.
Wildcats blank Ottawa, Basehor-Linwood to improve winning streak to 8
Louisburg freshman Kahlan Harris scored a pair of goals in the Wildcats’ 8-0 win over Ottawa on May 8 in Louisburg.
OTTAWA — Louisburg squared off with Ottawa for the second time in a week, and although both matches ended up in Wildcat victories, the matches were drastically different.
After a slow start in its previous game with the Cyclones, Louisburg wasted no time getting going as the Wildcats scored six first half goals and cruised to an 8-0 victory at home on May 8. It was also the Wildcats’ eighth consecutive victory.
Louisburg scored just once in the opening half of the first matchup before pulling away with a 4-goal win.
“We played an absurdly better game against Ottawa the second time around,” Louisburg coach Jordan Roquemore said. “Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised how much more effective we were against them on Thursday at home.
“When we first played Ottawa, we got bogged down by their defense in our attacking third. Our possession was not bad and we controlled much of the game, but our offensive combinations and finishing was really rough and not team-centric. We talked about some tactical adjustments we wanted to make and the girls not only applied them, they executed them at a very high level.”
Rowan Yows got the scoring started for the Wildcats (12-2) as she chipped a shot over the keeper’s head early in the first half thanks to an assist from Lila Edwards.
Edwards, a defender, put the Wildcats up 2-0 on a shot from about 20 yards out for her second goal of the year. About three minutes later, Yows struck again as she dribbled through the Cyclone defense to make it a 3-goal lead.
Senior Jaden Bentz, another defender, scored her first goal of the season as she had an high-arching shot that was out of reach of the keeper to make it 4-0.
Louisburg junior Lila Edwards was one of six goalscorers for the Wildcats in their win over Ottawa on May 8.
Just moments later, senior Baileigh Johnson found the back of the net on a cross from Yows. At the end of the first half, freshman Kahlan Harris struck for a goal to give the Wildcats a 6-0 halftime advantage.
Harris scored her second goal of the game about 30 seconds into the second half on an assist from freshman Cora Roche. Then three minutes later, junior Mena Fercho ended the match with a goal in the mercy-rule victory.
In all, the Wildcats had 23 shots, including 16 on target in just 43 minutes of action.
“Although I am always happy to see Rowan scoring goals, it was also nice to see others getting on the board on Thursday,” Roquemore said. “It says more about our team playing at its full potential. We play at our best when the entire team is playing both offense and defense. Everyone contributes to creating opportunities and stopping threats. If we rely completely on individual players to carry the load, we become easier to anticipate and much less potent in our play.”
Defensively, the Wildcats recorded their ninth shutout on the season as Ally Brown and Ellia Gibbons combined for the clean sheet.
Louisburg will try and continue its winning streak on May 12 as the Wildcats travel to De Soto.
Louisburg shuts out Basehor-Linwood
Louisburg went on the road to face off with Basehor-Linwood on May 6 and put together another strong showing.
The Wildcats scored four first half goals and that was all they needed in a 4-0 victory over the Bobcats.
“We had an excellent first half against Basehor,” Roquemore said. “I felt that we were playing some of our best soccer with our dynamic possession and opportunities created. We took over and we didn’t give them any chances.
“During the second half, we experimented with some formation changes that we expect to implement in future games. It was good for learning and getting comfortable with something different and more defensive. However, it also limited our offensive firepower. I’m glad we got the opportunity to try it and I’m hopeful it pays off if we have to use it later in the season.”
Louisburg senior goalie Ally Brown leaps to make a save at Basehor-Linwood on May 6.
Senior Rowan Yows recorded her third straight hat trick to lead the Wildcats, while freshman Cora Roche scored later in the first half.
“I feel like a broken record with Rowan, but she is on fire and is a force to be reckoned with while going to goal,” Roquemore said. “This was her third hat trick in a row which is rare to say the least. I also thought Cora’s goal was excellent. She has been quietly having an excellent season and I want to find ways to incorporate her more into our offensive front.”
Defensively, the Wildcats limited the Bobcats to just one shot on goal and senior goalie Ally Brown recorded the clean sheet.
Wildcats win three events at De Soto Invitational
Louisburg sophomore Adelyn Moore finished second in the javelin on May 2 at the De Soto Invitational.
DE SOTO — The Louisburg track and field team competed in one of its bigger meets of the season on May 2 at the De Soto Invitational.
Louisburg won three events between its two teams and had seven top three finishes at the 15-team meet at De Soto High School.
Overall, the Wildcat boys finished fourth in the team standings with 78.5 points. The girls were seventh with 62 points.
“While we didn’t have many top three finishes, we placed in the top seven in 10 different events,” Louisburg boys coach Andy Wright said. “To be able to secure fourth place in a tough meet like this one was good to see.”
As for the girls, the Wildcats had 10 top 6 finishes and a handful of those came from junior Kendall Crossley.
Crossley won the 100-meter dash in 12.70 seconds and later took runner-up in the 200 dash in 26.68, in what was a close race at the finish.
In the 4×100 relay, Crossley, Mackenzie Rooney, Addi Mallett and Suzanna Dansel continued their successful season with a gold medal finish in 50.57 seconds.
Crossley, Rooney, Mallett and Ellie Vohs took fourth in the 4×400 relay in 4:12.57. Mallett also went on to take fourth in the 100 dash in 13.14 seconds.
Vohs scored points in a pair of distance races as she took sixth in both the 800 (2:27) and 1,600-meter (5:36) runs.
Sophomore Caroline Apple took fifth in the 300 hurdles in 51.36 seconds and also was eighth in the high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches.
Also in the field events, sophomore Adelyn Moore had one of her best days of the season in the javelin as she took runner-up with a throw of 110-5.
Junior McKenna Lohse had one of her best days of the season in the shot put as she recorded a throw of 36-8 to finish fourth overall.
On the boys side, the Wildcats had a lot of success and personal best times or marks, and it started in the pole vault.
Senior Cooper Wingfield won the pole vault with clearance of 15-1. Senior teammate Jacob Brown was third with a personal-best mark of 13-6.
In the long jump, senior Gavin Lohse took third overall at 21-5.75 and senior Myles Vohs was fifth at 21-3.
The Wildcats also experienced a lot of success in the javelin as all three throwers scored points.
Junior Tasen Ellison led the charge with a toss of 154-2 and took fourth. Brayden Yoder was fifth at 144-11 and Cole Poindexter finished seventh at 140-8.
“Those guys are working hard everyday in practice,” Wright said. “I’m glad to see their dedication pay off.”
Louisburg also scored points in the shot put as senior Miles Meek was seventh at 43-7.
On the track, senior Aidan Meyer had his best performance of the season in the 400-meter dash as he was second in a new personal record time of 50.37 seconds. Senior Emmett White was sixth in the event at 52.93 and Lohse took fifth in the 200 dash in 23.12.
In the relays, the 4×400 of Meyer, White, Myles Vohs and Colton Blue had a strong race in 3:27. The 4×100 of Vohs, Meyer, Caleb Feldkamp and Lohse took sixth in 44.62, while the 4×800 group of Ryan Barberich, Spencer Mattison, Mathias Wright and Levi Cotter finished sixth in a personal record time of 8:52.
“We need to tighten up a few things in the 4×100 relay to get back to where we were a couple of weeks ago,” coach Wright said. “However, the 4×800 and 4×400 relays continue to improve every week.”
Senior Jerynce Brings Plenty led the WIldcats in the distance races. Brings Plenty was eighth in the 1,600 run in 4:41.
Louisburg is back in action on May 9 as the Wildcats travel to the Redbud Relays in Wellsville.
Wildcat swim qualifies two relays for state at Blue Valley Southwest
Louisburg senior Janie Harth swims the freestyle during a meet earlier this season. Harth, Sabra Brueggen, Ella Bockelman and Makayla Ellis qualified for state in the 200 and 400 free relays on May 3 at Blue Valley Southwest.
OVERLAND PARK — The Osawatomie-Paola-Louisburg-Spring Hill girls swim team faced one of its toughest tests of the season on May 3 as it traveled to the Timberwolf Invitational at Blue Valley Southwest High School.
The 14-team meet provided a lot of obstacles, but the Miami County team had its best showing at the meet in program history as it took third with 128 points. Southwest won with 263 and Lansing was second at 244.
“Blue Valley Southwest is one of the biggest, most competitive meets we attend currently and the ladies stepped up to the mark,” coach Mary Argeropoulos said. “Attitudes and outlooks were positive and those turned into quality swims and a solid team performance.”
It was a strong showing from the Louisburg side as the Wildcats qualified for state in four more events, including a pair of relays.
Sabra Brueggen Janie Harth, Ella Bockelman and Makayla Ellis qualified in both the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. In the 200, the Wildcats took fourth in a state qualifying time of 1 minutes and 51.43 seconds
In the 400 relay, the Louisburg quartet did much of the same as they finished fourth in 4:10.94 and the Wildcats have now qualified all three relays for the state competition.
“The Louisburg relays have been capable all season to throw down those state times, it was just a matter of all 4 athletes putting in the efficient swim at the same time,” Argeropoulos said. “There was a little shake up in personnel and everyone performed admirably.
“There is a friendly, fierce competition going for many slots in all three relays so it will be exciting to see what the make-up of each race holds. I’m sure the athletes, and I know the coaches, were relieved to put those qualifying times onto paper and now we are ready to charge to state with all three relays.”
Brueggen also added two more individual state times to her resume. The Louisburg senior finished second in the 100 breaststroke in a state time of 1:14 and also took fifth in the 100 butterfly in a qualifying time of 1:04.
Harth also had a pair of top 10 finishes for Louisburg as she was seventh in the 50 freestyle and ninth in the 100 freestyle. Weichert took ninth in the 100 butterfly.
Louisburg is back in action on May 7 as the Miami County team will host its final regular season meet of the year at the Ozone in Osawatomie. Events begin at 4 p.m.
It is also Senior Night as Brueggen, Harth and Weichert will all be honored with their families during the meet.
Week 6 Athlete of the Week: Kendall Crossley
Here is the Louisburg Sports Zone Athlete of the Week for week six of the spring sports season, sponsored by Edward Jones-Craig Holtzen.
KENDALL CROSSLEY, JUNIOR, TRACK AND FIELD
Louisburg junior Kendall Crossley has emerged as one of the Wildcats’ top sprinters and it was on display last Friday at a tough De Soto Invitational. Crossley won the 100-meter dash in 12.70 second and finished a close second in the 200 dash in 26.68.
Crossley also joined Mackenzie Rooney, Addi Mallett and Suzanna Dansel to win the 4×100-meter relay in 50.57 seconds. She is also a member of the 4×400 relay that took fourth.
The athlete of the week award is announced every Wednesday morning during the spring season and the winner is selected by Louisburg Sports Zone with the help of nominations from coaches.
Wildcat softball stops losing skid with split of Anderson County
Louisburg senior Addy Stohs is surrounded by her teammates after her first inning home run on May 1 in the doubleheader opener against Anderson County.
The Louisburg softball team has had some rough patches so far this season, however the May 1 doubleheader opener against Anderson County wasn’t one of them.
Louisburg snapped a four-game losing streak as the Wildcats earned a 10-7 victory over Anderson County at Lewis-Young Park. The Wildcats put together a strong performance, especially at the plate.
Senior Addy Stohs led the charge as she got the Wildcats going in the first inning. After walk by Shyloh Waite and a double from McKinley Harmon, Stohs launched a 3-run home run over the left field fence.
The Wildcats took a 3-0 lead — one they wouldn’t relinquish.
“I’m really glad we picked up a win on Thursday night,” Louisburg coach Nick Chapman said. “We needed it. Still not pretty, but these girls are working to be better everyday and I’m super proud to be their coach.
“Addy has been such a great leader and consistent force on our team. She is fantastic on defense and one of strongest bats. I know she has been searching for that home run all season. I’m so proud of her growth and what she means to our team.”
Freshman Lydia Copeland made it a 5-run lead with a two-run double in the third that scored Raeya Keagle and Annabelle Hathaway. Louisburg then went on to add four more runs in the fourth thanks to four singles and a pair of walks.
Senior Brynley Bauer singled to score Harmon, while Hathaway scored Stohs on a fielder’s choice. Keagle then singled home pinch-runner Camryn Lane and Katie McKain singled in Emily Brotherton to make it a 9-0 advantage.
Anderson County made things interesting with two runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and another in the seventh, but the Wildcats were able to hold on.
Louisburg junior pitcher Paytyn Van Tyle had a big day on the mound. Not only did she pick up the victory, Van Tyle also recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts.
Louisburg junior Paytyn Van Tyle struck out 11 batters against Anderson County on May 1 at Lewis-Young Park.
“Paytyn is a solid force on the mound,” Chapman said. “She makes teams work for their hits and keeps them off balance. She gets our defense the routine play balls. Eleven strikeouts is huge. She has gotten better each game she has pitched. I’m proud of where she is at and where she is going to be as we finish this season off.”
The second game didn’t go as planned for the Wildcats as they dropped the final contest, 9-5, to record a split.
The Wildcats took a 3-0 lead in the first inning once again as Stohs doubled home Waite and then scored on a wild pitch. Hathaway then singled home pinch-runner Hannah Basore.
Louisburg (3-17) had the lead until the fifth when Anderson County tied the game with three runs of its own and then scored six more in the sixth.
Hathaway finished strong at the plate as she had four hits and 2 RBIs, while Bauer added three. Brotherton and Keagle also had two hits a piece, while Harmon and Stohs had an RBI.
Louisburg returns to action on May 6 as the Wildcats travel to Eudora for a single game. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
Wildcats drop home game to Chanute
In what was a rare Saturday game, Louisburg hosted Chanute as the Wildcats hoped to get back in the win column.
Unfortunately, Chanute had other plans. The Blue Comets struck early and held on for a 6-2 victory over the Wildcats.
“I thought we played fine,” Chapman said. “We just had an inning that we let get away a little bit. We had a tough time staying consistent at the plate and Chanute capitalized. That’s what happens. We had some solid innings on defense.
“McKinley is staying real consistent at the plate. She had a solid game. Addy had another good game. The bottom of our lineup is starting to get more and more consistent. I know we aren’t winning games, but from where we started against Frontenac until now, we are two different teams. I’m so proud of our progress. Our program is getting better and the wins will come.”
Yows hat trick paces Wildcats past Ottawa for sixth straight win
Louisburg senior Rowan Yows recorded a hat trick on May 1 during the Wildcats’ 4-0 win at Ottawa.
OTTAWA — For most of the first half, the Louisburg girls soccer team dominated possession and put together several shots on goal during its May 1 game at Ottawa.
The only problem was many of those shots didn’t want to go in. That all changed in the second half.
Louisburg, which had a one-goal lead at halftime, scored three more times in the second half as the Wildcats cruised to a 4-0 victory over the Cyclones.
It was the sixth straight victory for the Wildcats (10-2) and their second straight shutout.
“Ottawa was a good game for us to grow from,” Louisburg coach Jordan Roquemore said. “Ottawa was firmly planted in defense and bogged us down in the middle throughout the whole game. We found out that playing our normal possession game through the middle was not working as well. We would move the ball into the attacking third and then get clogged by their layered defense. Overall, it was not our best game, but still a win and one that offers some valuable lessons.”
Wildcat senior Rowan Yows continued her goal-scoring tear as she recorded her third hat trick in the last four matches. She scored the team’s lone goal in the first half to give the Wildcats the early lead.
Louisburg freshman Kahlan Harris made it a 2-0 advantage midway through the second half. Yows tacked on two more goals, including one on an assist from Harris, to seal the road victory.
Defensively, the Wildcats didn’t allow a shot the entire match as the midfield and back line didn’t allow many runs down field.
Louisburg senior Baileigh Johnson heads the ball toward the goal during the Wildcats’ match on May 1 at Ottawa.
“Rowan still had a great game creating and finishing opportunities near the goal,” Roquemore said. “I was also really pleased with Lila Edwards’ play this game both in the back and midfield. Cora Roche also had a great game. There was a lot of individual effort from our side across the field. We just lacked some of our usual team chemistry working together as a cohesive whole.
“Although we really didn’t give up any significant opportunities to Ottawa during the game, they did attempt to counter-attack quickly when we found ourselves over-extended. Our defense did a great job recovering, but we want to avoid those moments in the future.”
Louisburg will try for win No. 7 in a row on May 6 as the Widcats travel to Basehor-Linwood. Varsity is set to begin at 6 p.m.
Barbour shines in Louisburg victory over Chanute
Louisburg junior Bristol Barbour earned the win on May 3 over Chanute with eight strikeouts. He also homered in the 11-3 victory.
Bristol Barbour did a little bit of everything for the Louisburg baseball team during the Wildcats’ home contest on May 3 against Chanute.
Barbour not only earned the win with an 8-strikeout performance on the mound, he also collected three hits — including a home run — to guide the Wildcats to an 11-3 victory over the Blue Comets at Lewis-Young Park.
The Louisburg junior put together five innings on the mound and allowed just two earned runs on five hits to go along with the eight strikeouts.
At the plate, Barbour recorded a 3-hit performance, which not only included a home run, but a bunt single as well. He also drove home three runs.
“Bristol did really well all around,” Louisburg coach Kade Larson said. “He threw a ton of strikes and created a ton of weak contact. He also got it done at the plate. Being able to bunt for a hit, and then hit a home run the next at bat, is pretty difficult and he made it look easy.”
It was a much-needed pick-me-up for the Wildcats after suffering a tough loss earlier in the week to Anderson County. However, as easy as the win was against Chanute, it didn’t start that way.
Chanute scored two runs in the top of the first to take an early lead, but the Wildcats answered right back with three in the bottom of the inning. The Blue Comets added a run in the third to tie it, but the Wildcats scored eight unanswered runs the rest of the way to seal the win.
“It was good to get out there on Saturday and fix some issues we had from the Thursday game,” Larson said. “The guys responded well and found a way to get the job done.”
Louisburg senior Carter Willey makes contact for a base hit against Chanute on May 3.
Louisburg pounded out 14 hits on the day and worked around three errors to get the win.
Wildcat senior Luke Schultz also had a big day with two doubles and an RBI. Meade Rutherford and Carter Willey also had two hits.
Jayce Toms and Evan Moreland each had an RBI double in the victory.
Junior Christian Owens pitched the final two innings of relief for the Wildcats and shut down the Blue Comets with just one hit allowed and had five strikeouts.
Louisburg will try and continue its winnings ways on May 6 when the Wildcats travel to Eudora for a doubleheader.
Wildcats lose home contest to Anderson County
In what was originally supposed to be a doubleheader, Louisburg’s contest with Anderson County on May 1 turned into a single game due to scheduling conflicts.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they didn’t get a chance to make up for what was a tough first game. Louisburg committed five errors, which led to a 5-4 loss to the Bulldogs.
Anderson County scored the winning run in the top of the sixth inning to pull ahead for good. Louisburg had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Wildcats struck out twice and grounded out to end the threat.
“We have some mistakes we have to clean up,” Larson said. “We didn’t play a clean game and allowed them to hang around. We kept battling and gave ourselves a chance at the end but just couldn’t get the job done.”
Seniors Meade Rutherford and Alex Saad split time on the mound and allowed just one earned run between the two of them to go along with nine strikeouts.
Rutherford also had a big night at the plate with two hits, including a 2-run home run in the third to give the Wildcats an early 2-1 lead.
Luke Schultz and Jayce Toms also had two hits a piece for the Wildcats and both had a double.
Wildcat track fares well at Spring Hill Invitational
Louisburg senior Miles Meek set a personal record in the shot put during the Spring Hill Invitational on April 28. Meek took second overall.
SPRING HILL — The Louisburg track and field team continues to rack up medals in what is a successful start to its season — this time it was during the Spring Hill Invitational.
During the April 28 meet, the Wildcats earned a total of 20 top three finishes. The Louisburg boys finished second with 52 points and the girls were third with 49.
The Wildcat boys team earned three gold medals, along with six runner-up finishes.
“Overall I believed we performed well as a group,” Louisburg boys coach Andy Wright said. “We had some that were dinged up that didn’t compete, but hopefully everyone will be ready for our next meet at De Soto.”
The Louisburg boys started strong in the field events as they finished 1-2 in the pole vault. Senior Cooper Wingfield took the gold after clearing 14 feet, 6 inches, while senior Jacob Brown was second at 12-6.
Junior Evan McKitrick won the triple jump with a mark of 38-10 and later finished in a tie for second in the high jump after he cleared 5-10.
Louisburg senior Jacob Brown clears a height in the pole vault during the Spring Hill Invite. Brown took second overall.
On the track, senior Colton Blue won the Wildcats’ third gold of the night as he set a personal record to win the 400-meter dash in 51.83 seconds. Senior teammate Emmett White was second at 52.75.
Senior Jerynce Brings Plenty had a strong finish in the 800-meter run as he took second in 2:07. He also took fifth in the 400 dash in 54.63.
In the sprints, senior Gavin Lohse took third in the 100 dash in 11.86 seconds. Another senior, Aidan Meyer, was fourth in the 200 dash in 24.21.
Lohse, Meyer, Myles Vohs and White took third in the 4×100-meter relay in 44.85 seconds.
Back in the field events, the Wildcats had a season-best day in the shot put as they medaled two in the top three. Seniors Miles Meek and junior Michael Foote both had personal bests in the event.
Meek finished runner-up with a toss of 44-2 and Foote took third at 42-4. Foote also scored points in the discus as he finished fifth at 114-2.
In the javelin, junior Tasen Ellison battled for the title, but took second overall with a throw of 145-10. Meek finished fourth at 125-5.
On the girls side, the Wildcats won four golds and all four were in the running events.
Louisburg’s Mackenzie Rooney hands the baton to Kendall Crossley during the 4×100-meter relay.
The 4×100-meter relay of Mackenzie Rooney, Kendall Crossley, Addi Mallett and Suzanna Dansel put together a season-best time of 50.04 seconds to win the relay by more than two seconds.
“The girls competed well at Spring Hill,” Louisburg girls coach John Reece said. “It was a very windy day for all competitors and I feel that the girls did not let that affect them. The 4×1 hit their handoffs and thus ran a season best, even though we are still a little dinged up.
“The high jump girls had to make adjustments, because of the wind, on the fly and found success and learned a little something along the way. All in all it was a good day.”
Crossley also went on to win the 200 dash in 27.30 seconds, while sophomore Breck Nielsen took fourth in the 400 dash in 1:08.
Sophomore Caroline Apple medaled in all three of her events, with her best coming in the 300-meter hurdles. Apple won the 300 in 51.34 seconds and finished second in the 100 hurdles in 18.01.
Louisburg sophomore Caroline Apple medaled in three events, including winning the 300-meter hurdles.
Apple also cleared 5 feet in the high jump and took third overall, while Nielsen was fifth at 4-8.
Senior Marissa Vallejo won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:07 and took fifth in the 3,200 in 13:27. Also in the distance races, sophomore Adelyn Moore took fourth in the 800 run 2:51.
In the field events, junior McKenna Lohse scored points in a pair of events. Lohse finished runner-up in the shot put with a toss of 35-7.25 and also took fourth in the discus at 98-8.
In the javelin, Moore and freshman Khloe Holland both scored points. Moore finished third with a throw of 95-10 and Holland took fourth at 94-1.
Louisburg is back in action on May 2 as the Wildcats travel to the De Soto Invitational. Events begin at 3:30 p.m.
