Wildcats secure first league championship since 2002

The Louisburg baseball team defeated Baldwin on Friday at Lewis-Young Park to secure its first league title in 22 years.

It has been a long while since the Louisburg baseball team had won a Frontier League title — 22 years to be exact.

Although the Wildcats had already clinched at least a share of the title prior to Friday’s home game with Baldwin, they wanted to be selfish.

The Wildcats made sure they got it all to themselves.

Louisburg jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 12-6 victory over the Bulldogs to secure its first league title since 2002.

“That is pretty crazy that it has been this long,” Louisburg coach Kade Larson said. “We have had some good teams over the years, and this team top to bottom has been awesome. Everyone knows their role and they are laying the groundwork for success in the future as well.”

Pitching played a big role for the Wildcats on Friday as junior Meade Rutherford gave the team five innings and allowed zero earned runs and struck out six.

Junior Meade Rutherford picked up the win for Louisburg as he struck out six over five innings.

Senior Declan Battle got the final two innings of work as he struck out two and gave up just two hits. All six of Baldwin’s runs were unearned thanks to some Louisburg errors.

“Meade came out and threw really well,” Larson said. “He gave us five solid innings and Declan came in and shut the door. We took great approaches at the plate and we were able to jump on them early and we never looked back. We probably gave up a couple runs that we shouldn’t have, but at the end of the day we locked them down when we needed to.”

The Wildcats got out to an early lead as they scored one in the first and three more in the second inning. Baldwin cut the Louisburg lead to 4-3 in the top of the fifth, but the Wildcats responded with five runs in their half of the fifth to pull away.

Louisburg sophomore Danny Napier was big at the plate for the Wildcats all night. Napier led the Wildcats with three hits, including a pair of doubles, to go along with 5 RBIs.

Louisburg senior Nathaniel Lamm celebrates with his teammates Friday following his home run.

Senior Nathaniel Lamm had a solo home run in the contest, while seniors Jack Anderson and Battle each drove home two runs. Senior Jackson Howard and junior Luke Schultz each had an RBI as well.

Sophomore Bristol Barbour had two hits. Senior Brody McGreer scored three runs and another senior, Conner Heston, scored twice.

The Wildcats are now 16-4 on the season as they have put together big victories throughout the year and Friday against Baldwin was no exception.

“It is huge,” Larson said of the league title. “The guys worked really hard for this. Everyone on the team had a job to do, and they came together and they got it done. We found a way to win and the guys have done that over and over this season.”

Now that a league title is out of the way, the Wildcats now have their eyes focused on the final week of the regular season and the postseason. Louisburg will play its final league contest tonight when it travels to Paola for a doubleheader.

The Wildcats will then host Basehor-Linwood for a single game Wednesday, before focusing on the regional tournament.

Louisburg coach Kade Larson gets the celebratory water bath thanks to catcher Danny Napier following the Wildcats’ win Friday over Baldwin.

It is a group that has pulled together at different times throughout the season and Larson believes they still have more left in them.

“We are starting to play some really good ball right now,” Larson said. “We still have some things we need to clean up. I don’t think we have played our best game yet, and that is what the guys continue to strive for, is to play their best game. We are starting to peak at the right time and hopefully we can roll that into regionals and put a little playoff run together.

“It is a really tight knit group. Everyone is for everyone and they don’t care who gets the job done, as long as it gets done. It starts with the seniors, all the way down to our freshmen on junior varsity. Everyone is for the team and that is all we can ask for.”

Wildcats fall to Eudora in final game of busy stretch

Louisburg senior Hailey Sword beats a Bonner Springs player to the ball Thursday in Bonner Springs.

Three games in four days is tough on any team, but for a squad already dealing with multiple injuries, it is even more taxing.

That is what Louisburg faced Friday when it hosted Eudora for its third match in four days. The Wildcats tried to overcome their rash of injuries, but an early Eudora goal proved to be the difference in a 1-0 loss at Wildcat Stadium.

“We were a pretty run down group by Friday,” Louisburg coach Ben York said. “Three games in four days would be normally difficult, but since the Augusta game we haven’t been 100 percent healthy since. Eudora had a good game plan and they created an opportunity early. We were able to have a lot of opportunities are ourselves, we just couldn’t get one to go.”

Eudora got on the board early as the Cardinals scored in the first 10 minutes of the match to go up one goal, but the Wildcats put the pressure on the Cardinal defense after that.

Louisburg (9-4-1) had 12 shots on goal for the match, compared to just four for Eudora. The Wildcats just had a tough time finding the back of the net.

“We really did have more opportunities than they did and we had probably 12 shots on goal,” York said. “We had a couple off the post that didn’t go. It was frustrating and the girls know we probably should have won the game. We didn’t play as well we could have, even with the injuries we have.”

Louisburg junior Baileigh Johnson puts a shot on goal Thursday at Bonner Springs.

The loss also put the Wildcats with a 1-2 record on the week after a setback to Basehor-Linwood on April 30, but bounced back with a win over Bonner Springs on Thursday.

Most of the Wildcat midfield have been dealing with injuries and hope to use the last week of the regular season to get healthier for a postseason run.

Louisburg did get a piece of good news as senior defender Ellery Allen will return to action during today’s home game against Ottawa. Allen has missed all season with a foot injury, but York is excited to have her back.

“Ellery practiced full on, so it will be nice to get her back as she is one of the top three or four players on our team with all the experience she has,” York said. “She is obviously not going to be as conditioned as the rest of the team, but she is going to be fine and will give her a few minutes here and there. Hopefully we can get this group as healthy as we can for the postseason.”

Following Tuesday’s home game against Ottawa, the Wildcats will host Lansing on Thursday for Senior Night.

Louisburg shuts out Bonner Springs on the road

After a tough loss to Basehor-Linwood on April 30, Louisburg needed a little pick-me-up and the Wildcats got it against Bonner Springs.

The Wildcats scored a pair of goals in each half as they blanked Bonner Springs, 4-0

“I thought we played pretty well at Bonner,” Louisburg coach Ben York said. “Their coach does a nice job of getting them better as the season goes along. We got up 15 minutes and we were able to go from there. The girls wanted to put a few more goals away, but at the end of the day we will take it and it is always good to get a win.

Louisburg’s Rylee Moore jumps into the arms of Ellia Gibbons after Gibbons scored Thursday at Bonner Springs.

Louisburg senior Lexi Hampton opened the scoring with a goal near the top of the box. Junior Rowan Yows added another to make it a 2-0 halftime lead.

Senior Hailey Sword launched a shot from about 25 yards to give the Wildcats their third goal and freshman Ellia Gibbons found the back of the net to seal the win for the Wildcats.

Senior goalie Macy Lemke earned the clean sheet and it was the Wildcats’ seventh shutout of the season.

Wildcat softball honors five on Senior Night against Eudora

The Louisburg softball team honored its five seniors last Tuesday on Senior Night. Pictured (from left) is Rylee Hickey, Ashley Moreau, Jenna Cauthon, head coach Nick Chapman, Megan Quinn and Izzy Moreland.

The result wasn’t what the Louisburg softball team was hoping for last Tuesday against Eudora at Lewis-Young Park.

Still, that didn’t stop the Wildcats from honoring what was a special senior class on Senior Night. Following the contest, seniors Jenna Cauthon, Rylee Hickey, Ashley Moreau, Izzy Moreland and Megan Quinn were honored with their parents following the contest.

The five seniors have all played vital roles on the Wildcats since their freshman season, and as their final campaign winds to a close, Louisburg coach Nick Chapman is sad to see this group go.

“I’m so glad we got to recognize those five seniors,” Chapman said. “They have made up the majority of our varsity squad since they were freshmen and they have been a giant part of this program for the last four years. They have grown so much and I am so proud of them.

“They have also pushed me to grow and continue to grow over these last four years. Those five will always hold a special place in my heart. I can’t wait to see what they are going to accomplish after high school.”

Rylee Hickey follows through on a swing last Tuesday against Eudora.

As for the game, the Wildcats couldn’t keep up with one of the top teams in the Frontier League as Eudora handed Louisburg a 14-2 loss.

Eudora scored eight unanswered runs through the first four innings and the Wildcats were unable to rally. Only five of the 14 Eudora runs were earned as the Wildcats had to deal with some mistakes on defense.

“I thought we played alright,” Chapman said. “Eudora is a really good team and we knew that going into it. We gave ourselves a chance in the first few innings and kept it close. We faced a pretty solid pitcher and got her figured out, but we hurt ourselves in the field.

“The positive on the night is we did not get run-ruled by them, which we have been run-ruled by Eudora every year for the last 5 years. We are doing some really good things, but we just need to start doing them more consistently and give ourselves a chance down this last stretch of the season.”

Moreau led the Wildcat offense with a pair of hits, including a double. Hickey had the team’s lone RBI, while sophomore Katelyn Smart and junior Brynley Bauer also had hits.

The Wildcats will try and get back on the winning track this Tuesday when they travel to Paola for a doubleheader.

Fort Scott takes two from Louisburg

On April 23, Louisburg hosted another talented team in Fort Scott, and the Tigers handed Louisburg a pair of 12-0 and 14-9 setbacks.

After a quiet first game, the Wildcat bats heated up in the nightcap as they scored seven runs in the final three innings, but couldn’t overtake Fort Scott.

Louisburg senior Jenna Cauthon tries to turn a double play against Fort Scott on April 23.

Jenna Cauthon led the Louisburg bats with three hits and a double in the game to go along with 3 RBIs. Izzy Moreland also had three hits, to go along with a double and 2 RBIs.

Junior Brynley Bauer and Ashley Moreau each had a pair of hits, while Addy Stohs and Rylee Hickey both recorded a double. Senior Megan Quinn also had 2 RBIs.

Wildcats clinch share of league title with Senior Night win over Eudora

Louisburg senior Declan Battle celebrates with his teammates after scoring a run Tuesday against Eudora.

It’s been 22 years since Louisburg baseball had found itself atop the Frontier League standings.

That long wait is finally over.

The Wildcats clinched at least a share of the Frontier League title Tuesday as they used a big second inning to propel them to a 16-5 victory over Eudora. Add in the fact it was Senior Night, and it was an emotional night all the way around.

“Clinching a share of the league title is huge for this program,” Louisburg coach Kade Larson said. “This was one of the goals they set at the start of the year and they’ve worked their butts off to make it happen.”

It wasn’t the best start for the Wildcats as they found themselves down five runs after the top of the first inning. It didn’t take long for them to turn it around.

Louisburg (15-4) scored 12 runs in the bottom of the second inning and took a 13-5 lead. It was lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

“We really battled back in that game,” Larson said. “These guys knew they could do it and took a great approach up to the plate. We had some really great team at-bats that got the job done for us.”

Louisburg senior Brody McGreer slides safely into third base Tuesday against Eudora.

The Wildcats got big hits from up and down their lineup. Senior Brody McGreer had two hits and 4 RBIs to help lead the way, while senior Jack Anderson had two hits, including a double and 3 RBIs.

Senior Jackson Howard, junior Luke Schultz and sophomore Danny Napier each drove home two runs, and Schultz added a 2-run triple in the second inning.

Junior Meade Rutherford had an RBI double and senior Nathaniel Lamm also recorded an RBI. Sophomore Bristol Barbour finished with two hits, while senior Declan Battle scored three runs.

Despite getting off to a rocky start in the first, Louisburg starter Alex Saad settled in and pitched three scoreless innings after that. Battle pitched the final inning to secure the win.

Louisburg senior Jackson Howard tries to put the tag on a Eudora runner Tuesday at Lewis-Young Park.

“Saad had a tough first inning, but it was really great to see him bounce back the way he did,” Larson said. “He pitched really well after that. Once we got him a lead, we knew he wasn’t going to give it back.”

Clinching a league title was the perfect way for the Wildcats honor their six seniors. Battle, Lamm, Howard, McGreer, Anderson and Conner Heston were all recognized with their parents following the contest.

“These seniors have been great for this program,” Larson said. “They have always done things the right way and have been great role models for the underclassmen. They will definitely be missed.”

Louisburg seniors (from left) Jack Anderson, Conner Heston, Declan Battle, Jackson Howard, Nathaniel Lamm and Brody McGreer were all honored Tuesday on Senior Night.

The Wildcats were scheduled to play a doubleheader with the Cardinals, but the second game was canceled due to severe weather.

Louisburg will try and win the outright league title Friday when it hosts Baldwin in a makeup contest. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Lewis-Young Park.

Home run barrage leads to split at Chanute

Louisburg traveled to Chanute on Saturday for a pair of games against the Blue Comets and Prairie View.

After a tough 10-6 loss to Chanute, the Wildcat bats came alive in a big way with a 19-3 win over Prairie View.

The Wildcats hit four home runs in the win over the Buffaloes, including two off the bat of senior Jack Anderson. Sophomore Danny Napier and junior Rylan Carty also homered in the win.

Louisburg sophomore Danny Napier was one of three Wildcats to homer against Prairie View.

Junior Alex Saad also had a big day at the plate with three hits, including a double and triple, to go along with a team-high 4 RBIs. Junior Meade Rutherford had a double and 2 RBIs.

Anderson also started for Louisburg and picked up the win. He pitched four innings and gave up just one earned run and had four strikeouts. Howard pitched the final inning and struck out the side.

In the first game against Chanute, five Wildcat errors led to four unearned runs for the Blue Comets, which turned out to be the difference.

Chanute jumped out to a 5-1 lead and the Wildcats were unable to play catchup.

Junior Luke Schultz had a big day at the plate with three hits, including a solo home run. Declan Battle, Napier, Anderson, Schultz and Nathaniel Lamm each had a double in the loss.

Wingfield’s record vault highlights Wildcat track at De Soto

Louisburg’s Cooper Wingfield slips over the bar Monday at the De Soto Invitational as he broke the school record in the pole vault with a clearance of 15-7.

DE SOTO — Louisburg pole vaulters have had a lot of success in recent years, which has included three state titles and a runner-up finish.

Reaching new heights would be quite the feat for the Wildcat vaulters, but junior Cooper Wingfield did something no Louisburg vaulter has done before.

Wingfield broke the school record Monday at the De Soto Invitational as he cleared 15 feet 7 inches to win the event going away. The old mark of 15-6 was set by Jacob Albright in 2012.

Wingfield tried for 15-9 and just narrowly missed the mark on his third attempt.

“We had an excellent day for vaulting, and it showed,” Louisburg coach Andy Wright said. “Cooper has been working very hard, and got the right conditions to go over 15 feet and he made it happen. I don’t think he is done, and I am excited to see him keep climbing.”

As for the Wildcat teams, they completed in their most challenging meet of the season as they went up against schools from across the Kansas City area in the 17-team meet.

The Louisburg boys finished seventh in the team standings as the Wildcats recorded 36 points and Piper won the meet with 113.

“It was our biggest meet of the year,” Wright said. “We wanted a meet of nice weather and tough competition, and in this meet we got both. I really thought the boys came out, competed, and stepped up among tough competitions.

“Although we didn’t place very many in the top 4 of the event, we had a lot of personal bests. It was a good measure of where we are, and where we need to be. I am encouraged that we are going to be peaking at the right time.”

The Louisburg girls recorded 34 points on the day as they took 12th overall. The Lady Cats got 10 of those points from senior Maddy Carpenter-Ross as she won the pole vault after clearing 11 feet.

“At a tough meet, we had some great performances that might not have scored a point,” Louisburg girls coach John Reece said. “We had several out for other school activities. But the girls continue to work hard and the end of the season should bring some positive performances as we peak at the right time.”

Junior Gavin Lohse also had a big performance on the boys side as he recorded a mark 21-7.75 in the long jump to medal second overall.

Junior Jacob Brown also scored points for the Wildcats in the pole vault as he cleared 12-6 to take fourth overall, while Jaymes Melton had a personal best throw in the shot put of 45 feet to take eighth.

Louisburg’s Hunter Heinrich helped the Wildcats as he scored points in two relays and in the 400 dash.

On the track, the Wildcat boys also scored points in a pair of relays. The 4×400 team of Aiden Meyer, Emmett White, Hunter Heinrich and Blaise Vohs took fifth in 3:29.97, while the 4×100 team of Josiah McCaskill, Lohse, Caleb Feldkamp and Heinrich was sixth in 44.39.

Heinrich also earned a fifth place finish in the 400 dash in a personal best time of 51.99 seconds, while Vohs was eighth in the 800 run in a best of 2:04.08.

On the girls side, the Wildcats scored points in a pair of field events, that included two personal bests.

Freshman Adelyn Moore recorded a personal best throw of 121-7 in the javelin to finish fourth overall, while senior Katie Elpers was fifth at 117-7.

In the shot put, sophomore McKenna Lohse recorded a personal best toss of 36-11 I the shot put to finish fifth overall.

Louisburg sophomore Kendall Crossley finished fifth in the 400 dash Monday in De Soto and set a new personal record.

On the track, sophomore Kendall Crossley also recorded a personal best. In the 400-meter dash, Crossley took fifth in 1:02.27.

Senior Maddy Rhamy ran well in the 3,200-meter run as she took fifth in 12:40, while sophomore Suzanna Dansel was sixth in the 100 dash in 13.24.

Wildcats medal three, finish second at Ottawa Invite

The Louisburg golf team of (from left) Sam Frederick, Derek Fredereick, Ayden McKain, Garrison Bloustine, Cole Mynsted and Matt Stohs finished second Monday at the Ottawa Invitational.

OTTAWA — In what was a rain-soaked course, the Louisburg golf team had its fair share of challenges, but that didn’t seem to bother the Wildcats.

Louisburg had three golfers finish in the top 10 and the Wildcats finished second in the team standings Monday at the Ottawa Invitational.

“The varsity golfers played amazing,” Louisburg coach Brian Burns said. “I have not had four score in the 320’s for many years and they still didn’t win the meet. Of course, we enjoyed medaling as a team and playing well.”

The Wildcats shot a 323 and finished just two strokes behind Ottawa in a battle for the team title on the Great Life Fitness and Golf Course.

Sophomore Derek Frederick, senior Cole Mynsted and junior Sam Frederick also left with some extra hardware.

Derek Frederick medaled fourth overall as he shot a 79. Mynsted and Sam Frederick each carded an 80 as they took fifth and sixth, respectively. Junior Garrison Bloustine shot a personal best 84 to finish 11th and one spot out of the medals.

“It was great to see one of my fifth and sixth spots in Garrison contribute to our score,” Burns said. “It was the first time he broke 90. Also, a big congrats goes out to Derek, Sam and Cole for medaling in the top 10.”

Sophomore Matt Stohs recorded an 88 to finish fifth on the team and 16th overall in the 10-team meet. Senior Ayden McKain carded a 99 to take 28th overall and round out the Wildcat lineup.

Louisburg is back in action Tuesday when it travel to Garnett for the Anderson County Invitational.

Stohs records league title in shortened tournament

Golfers were dodging rain drops last Thursday at the Frontier League Invitational, before the tournament was eventually called halfway through.

Luckily for the Wildcats, they didn’t let the wet weather bother them.

Matt Stohs won the league title at Sycamore Ridge Golf Course in Spring Hill and he wasn’t the only medalist. Senior Cole Mynsted and junior Sam Frederick also ended with individual medals.

As a team, the Wildcats finished second in the league standings.

Wildcat swim qualifies third relay for state

Louisburg junior Janie Harth, along with Sabra Brueggen, Cadence Weichert and Ella Bockelman, qualified their third relay for state Saturday at Blue Valley Southwest.

The Wildcats qualified their third relay for state as the 200 freestyle relay team of Sabra Brueggen, Cadence Weichert, Janie Harth and Ella Bockelman had a state qualifying time of 1 minute and 51.75 seconds and took fourth overall. It is the first time in school history that they will send all three relays to the state meet.

As a team, Osawatomie-Paola-Louisburg-Spring Hill finished fifth overall with 131 points in the 9-team meet.

Brueggen led Louisburg with a pair of third place medals. The Wildcat junior took third in the 50 freestyle in 26.02 seconds and third in the 100 freestyle in 56.51 seconds.

Week 6 Athlete of the Week: Jaden Bentz

Here is the Louisburg Sports Zone Athlete of the Week for week six of the spring sports season, sponsored by Edward Jones-Craig Holtzen.

JADEN BENTZ, JUNIOR, GIRLS SOCCER

Defense has been the name of the game for the Louisburg girls soccer team as of late and Jaden Bentz has been a big part of the Wildcats’ success. Following a 3-0 shutout of Ottawa on Thursday, the Wildcats had won four of their last five matches — all by shutout. Bentz has been assigned to the team’s best player and has made life difficult for the opposition.

“Normally these awards go to offensive players, and that is understandable, but Jaden is an absolute shut down defender,” Louisburg coach Ben York said. “She is one of the main reasons we have the shutouts we have this year.”

The Wildcats currently have an 8-3-1 record on the season, and that lone tie was a 0-0 result. Louisburg had gone five straight games without giving a goal and Bentz was an active part in that. Louisburg currently has six shutouts on the season.

The athlete of the week award is announced every Wednesday morning during the spring season and the winner is selected by Louisburg Sports Zone with the help of nominations from coaches.

Previous Winners:

Week 1: Jack Anderson

Week 2: Nathaniel Lamm

Week 3: Derek Frederick

Week 4: Izzy Moreland

Week 5: Maddy Carpenter-Ross

“The meet gave us a chance to find out where we are and spotlighted what work is needed,” Louisburg boys coach Andy Wright said. “This is the time of year where you have to determine if you are going to keep getting better or are happy where you are at, and we want to keep getting better.”

Wildcats record road shutout of Ottawa

Louisburg senior Lola Edwards beats a defender to the ball during a match earlier this season.

OTTAWA — The injury bug has caught up with the Louisburg girls soccer team as the Wildcats currently have several players dealing with bumps and bruises, which isn’t ideal for a team that isn’t very deep.

Despite that, Louisburg has won four of its last five matches and one of those came Tuesday on the road as the Wildcats shutout Ottawa, 3-0.

It wasn’t the prettiest of performances according to head coach Ben York, but he was pleased to see his team battle through some adversity.

“We played a little uninspired at times, but I don’t want to take away from the win as they are all important this time of year,” York said. “We probably had 80 percent of possession but we didn’t finish a lot of chances.

“We are battling through some stuff physically and we aren’t really deep. We had some girls that came in the game that gave us some good minutes. Every team has stuff going on at this point in the year, but we want to be trending upward toward the end of the season and this win helped with that.”

Louisburg got on the board early as senior Lexi Hampton put the Wildcats up 1-0 in the first half. Junior Baileigh Johnson followed with another goal and the Wildcats led 2-0 at halftime.

Junior Rowan Yows sealed the win in the second half with her first goal of the match and the Wildcats improved their record to 8-2-1 on the season, which is the best on the East side of Class 4-1A.

“We had a ton of shots,” York said. “Ottawa just packed it in and made it hard for us to score at times. We just tried to go through the defense instead of taking some shots from distance. We need to be more patient, but it is tough when the defense just packs it in on you.”

Louisburg’s defense played well as goalie Macy Lemke earned the clean sheet, while senior Hailey Sword was active in the back to lead the Wildcat defense.

The Wildcats will try and make it two straight wins tonight as they host Eudora in a Frontier League match. Start time is set for 6 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.

“Definitely not disappointed with this win, but I want to see us on the uptick and accelerating toward the end of the season,” York said. “Eudora is going to be a competitive game for us, we have to come to play.”

Wildcats tie Augusta, roll Chanute

Last week had its ups and downs for Louisburg, but after it all, the Wildcats avoided the loss column.

Louisburg earned a 0-0 tie against Augusta last Friday in Emporia, but recorded a 9-0 victory at Chanute on April 16.

Against Chanute, Baileigh Johnson, Lexi Hampton and Rowan Yows each scored two goals. Mena Fercho also found the back of the net, while Faith Sewell and Lila Edwards each scored their first varsity goal.

“It was really good,” York said. “One of the things I have been about, is we really share the load on who gets the scoring. How we approach the game is, if we are doing it properly, is about being unselfish and kids are just as interested in assists as goals. We got Macy some time outside of the goal and that was cool too.”

The Wildcats battled injuries against Augusta as Hampton, Yows and Fercho all had to leave the match at one time, but neither team could score in regulation or the two overtimes periods.

“We were the better skilled team and they were more disciplined and physical,” York said of Augusta. There was a lot of pulling and grabbing and that wore us down pretty good. We weren’t at full strength. Hailey played a really good game in the back and Macy made some really good saves too that kept the game scoreless.”
