Week 9 Athlete of the Week: Delaney Wright

Here is the Louisburg Sports Zone Athlete of the Week for week nine of the spring sports season, sponsored by Edward Jones-Craig Holtzen.

DELANEY WRIGHT, SENIOR, TRACK AND FIELD

Louisburg senior Delaney Wright, who has been recovering from an injury most of the season, put it all together Friday during the Class 4A regional meet at Eudora High School. Wright qualified for state in four events and won three regional titles in the process.

Wright won the long jump with a mark of 17 feet, 9.5 inches. She later won the 400-meter dash in 1:00 and the 200 dash in 26.11 seconds. To end the meet, she joined Mackenzie Rooney, Emma Lohse and Emma Vohs to take third in the 4×400-meter relay. When it was all complete, Wright helped the Lady Cats to their first regional plaque in more than a decade as they finished second overall.

Here is the Louisburg Sports Zone Athlete of the Week for week eight of the spring sports season, sponsored by Louisburg Family Dental.

A.J. ARRIOLA, SENIOR, GOLF

It was quite the week for Louisburg senior A.J. Arriola. In a span of six days, Arriola competed in three tournaments and medaled in each of them, but none bigger than Monday’s regional tournament in Fort Scott. Arriola shot a personal best 78 to finish as the regional runner-up and helped the Wildcats qualify for state for the third consecutive season.

Last week, Arriola competed at both the Anderson County and Prairie View Invitationals and medaled in each. He finished sixth in Garnett last Tuesday, and later took ninth at Prairie View on Thursday. In all, Arriola has medaled in seven meets this season.

KOLBY KATTAU, SENIOR, BASEBALL

Louisburg senior Kolby Kattau helped the Wildcat baseball team to a memorable Senior Night victory over Eudora last week. Kattau finished with three hits and two doubles in the 5-3 victory over the Cardinals and also added an RBI and two runs scored to his line. Kattau also picked up the win as the team’s starting pitcher as he went 5.1 innings, gave up one earned run and struck out four.

On the season, Kattau leads the Wildcats with a .509 batting average and a team-high 29 hits — including six doubles, three triples and a home run. As a starting pitcher, he has three of the team’s seven wins on the season to go along with 25 strikeouts.

REESE JOHNSON, SENIOR, GIRLS SOCCER

Louisburg senior Reese Johnson guided the Wildcat girls soccer team in a week that featured three matches in a four-day span. Johnson finished the week with two goals and two assists in wins over Ottawa, Eudora and Lansing — two of which were on the road.

On the season, Johnson has led the Wildcats from her outside midfield spot as she has nine goals and six assists on the season. Louisburg currently has a 10-3 record on the year.

MIA WILSON, SENIOR, SOFTBALL

Louisburg senior Mia Wilson helped the Lady Cat softball team — both in the field and with the bat — last week in a pair of victories over Osawatomie. Wilson started the first game of the doubleheader last Thursday and struck out 12 batters in a 7-inning victory.

Wilson continued that success at the plate. In the three games (two against Osawatomie and one against Ottawa) she tallied six hits and finished her week with eight runs driven in. A few of those came with one swing of the bat when she hit a 3-run home run in the nightcap of the doubleheader against Osawatomie.

NATHAN VINCENT, JUNIOR, TRACK AND FIELD

Louisburg junior Nathan Vincent has dominated the javelin and the discus ring so far this season. Through three meets, Vincent has won the two events each time out and that included his performance Thursday at the Anderson County Invitational.

Vincent won the javelin with a throw of 153 feet, 11 inches to help the Wildcats to a second place team finish. He also found success in the discus as he took first with a toss of 143-4. Vincent is a returning state medalist in the javelin for the Wildcats.

EMMA LOHSE, JUNIOR, TRACK AND FIELD

Louisburg junior Emma Lohse is off to a strong start this season for the girls track and field team. Lohse won two events last Thursday at the Paola Invitational and helped a relay to a top 3 finish in less than ideal weather conditions.

Lohse won the 100-meter dash in 12.98 seconds and was seeded fifth going into the race. She continued her success in the 200-meter dash as she won with a time 27.46 seconds. In the relays, Lohse joined Mackenzie Rooney, Delaney Wieland and Emma Vohs to take third in the 4×400.

SABRA BRUEGGEN, FRESHMAN, SOFTBALL/GIRLS SWIM

Louisburg freshman Sabra Brueggen made big contributions to two different teams for the Wildcats last week. It started on the softball field on Mar. 29 as Brueggen collected four hits, including a 2-run double in the first game, to help the Lady Cats to a sweep of Baldwin. She also scored four runs and had two stolen bases.

Last Wednesday, Brueggen hit the waters for the Osawatomie-Paola-Louisburg girls swim team and qualified for state in two events in her first meet of the season. Brueggen recorded a time of 26.04 seconds to qualify for state and win the 50-yard freestyle. She later went on to win the 100 backstroke and recorded a state qualifying time of 1:03.82.

LEXI HAMPTON, SOPHOMORE, GIRLS SOCCER

Louisburg sophomore Lexi Hampton opened the 2022 soccer season with some memorable performances in her first two games. On Friday against Atchison, Hampton scored a team-high five goals, and added an assist, in the Wildcats’ 10-0 victory and earned her second hat trick on the season.

Her first hat trick came a few days earlier as she finished with three goals in a 5-0 victory over Lansing on Mar. 22 in Louisburg’s season opener. Hampton led the Wildcats in goals scored last year as a freshman and is off to a good start this season.

Week 11 Athlete of the Week: Mack Newell

Here is the Louisburg Sports Zone Athlete of the Week for week 11 of the winter sports season, sponsored by Landmark National Bank of Louisburg.

MACK NEWELL, JUNIOR, BOYS BASKETBALL

Louisburg junior Mack Newell had a big week for the Wildcat basketball team and helped them to an overtime win over Harrisonville last Thursday. Newell led the Wildcats with 21 points and 10 rebounds in their regular season finale in Harrisonville. The victory allowed Louisburg to get into the sub-state tournament.

On the previous Tuesday, Newell also finished in double figures with 12 points in a close loss to Paola. Newell is currently averaging 7.5 points and 6.3 rebounds a game on the season.
