Week 9 Athlete of the Week: Maddy Rhamy

Here is the Louisburg Sports Zone Athlete of the Week for week nine of the fall sports season, sponsored by Edward Jones-Craig Holtzen.

MADDY RHAMY, SOPHOMORE, CROSS COUNTRY

Louisburg sophomore Maddy Rhamy and the Lady Cat cross country team made a lot of noise at the Class 4A meet last Saturday in Wamego. Rhamy was one of three Louisburg runners to earn a state medal as she finished 13th overall in 20 minutes and 51 seconds. It was Rhamy’s second consecutive state medal.

Rhamy also helped the Lady Cats to a fifth-place team finish out at state. Sophomore Emma Vohs (6th) and senior Reese Johnson (19th) were also awarded state medals.

Here is the Louisburg Sports Zone Athlete of the Week for week eight of the fall sports season, sponsored by Dr. Laura’s Orthodontics.

DAVIS GUETTERMAN, SENIOR, VOLLEYBALL

Louisburg senior Davis Guetterman helped guide the Lady Cat volleyball team to a 2-1 week and a spot in the sub-state finals against Baldwin. Guetterman led Louisburg with 59 assists in the three matches to go along with 19 kills and four aces.

Although the Lady Cats saw their season come to an end, Guetterman finished with a big year for Louisburg. As one of the team’s setters, Guetterman led her team with 456 assists on the season and also led the team in aces with 58. Defensively, Guetterman also performed well with 184 digs.

MASON DOBBINS, JUNIOR, FOOTBALL

Louisburg junior Mason Dobbins was a pain for the Ottawa defense last Friday night. The Wildcat wide receiver torched the Cyclone secondary for five catches, 89 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 40-13 road victory over Ottawa.

On the season, Dobbins has 19 catches for 302 yards and three touchdowns. The Wildcats are currently on a 3-game winning streak as they head into Friday’s rivalry game with Paola.

MACK NEWELL, JUNIOR, BOYS SOCCER

Louisburg junior Mack Newell has been a big reason for the success of the Wildcat boys soccer team in recent weeks. Newell, the Wildcat goalkeeper, shutout Spring Hill on the road to give Louisburg a revenge win on the Broncos with six saves on Oct. 5. Last Thursday, Newell recorded eight saves in the Wildcats’ win over state-ranked Eudora.

Louisburg is currently on a 6-game winning streak and Newell has had a strong season to date, despite missing 10 days early in the season. On the year, Newell has recorded seven shutouts, eight victories and 41 saves.

BRADEN YOWS, SENIOR, BOYS SOCCER

Louisburg senior Braden Yows came back from injury this past week in impressive fashion. In the Wildcats’ two games last week, Yows scored a goal in each of their wins against Tonganoxie and Baldwin. He also had 10 shots and six shots on goal in those two games.

Overall, Yows has 11 goals and seven assists on the season despite missing a couple games due to injury. He is also averaging a goal per game.

EMMA VOHS, SOPHOMORE, CROSS COUNTRY

In just her first year of cross country, Louisburg sophomore Emma Vohs is already making a name for herself. Vohs finished second at the Ramsey Invitational last Thursday at Prairie View High School. She was the top Lady Cat runner with a time of 21 minutes and 13 seconds.

Vohs joined Maddy Rhamy, Reese Johnson, Nova Ptacek, Erin Apple, Bree Gassman and Lola Edwards to win their second straight girls team title with 35 points. Vohs has medaled in all four of her meets to start the season.

CORINNA MCMULLEN, SENIOR, VOLLEYBALL

Louisburg senior Corinna McMullen has contributed in every way possible for the No. 1-ranked Lady Cat volleyball team. McMullen, who is the team’s setter, also plays all six rotations. McMullen leads the team with 160 assists and also has a team-high 106 kills.

McMullen also has done the job from behind the service line as she is tied for the team lead with 24 aces in 13 matches. She has also had a big season defensively with 95 digs, which is third on the team.

DECLAN BATTLE, SOPHOMORE, FOOTBALL

Louisburg sophomore Declan Battle was a big reason for the Wildcats’ come-from-behind 34-28 overtime victory against Tonganoxie. The Wildcat quarterback accounted for four touchdowns and totaled 212 yards through air and on the ground. He also ran in two 2-point conversions.

Battle guided the Wildcats as they rallied from 15 points down at halftime to secure their first victory of the season in their home opener on Friday.

Week 1 Athlete of the Week: Jaden Vohs

JADEN VOHS, SENIOR, CROSS COUNTRY

In his first ever cross country meet, senior Jaden Vohs ran like a veteran Thursday during at the Jerry Howarter Invitational at the Garnett Country Club. Vohs finished first with a time of 17 minutes and 52 seconds and won the race by more than 20 seconds.

Not only did Vohs win the individual part, but he helped the Wildcat boys to a first place team finish with 43 points and finished 12 points ahead of runner-up Iola. Freshman Jerynce Brings Plenty was also a big part of that as he took second, right behind Vohs.

Week 10 Athlete of the Week: Tom Koontz

Here is the Louisburg Sports Zone Athlete of the Week for week 10 of the spring sports season, sponsored by Edward Jones-Craig Holtzen.

Tom Koontz, Junior, Track and Field

Not only did the Louisburg boys track and field team win the Class 4A state championship last weekend in Wichita, but junior Tom Koontz captured one of his own, as well. Koontz won the 4A state title in the 110-meter hurdles in a personal best time of 14.87 seconds and earned one of four medals on the day. He also went on to take second in the 300 hurdles.

Koontz also joined a pair of relays that got state medals. Koontz, along with Justin Collins, Ben Wiedenmann and Ethan Ptacek took second in 4×100-meter relay. The same team clinched the state championship in the final race of the day, the 4×400 relay. The Wildcat quartet took third overall and edged out Andale for the team title.
