Week 12 Athlete of the Week: Ben Guetterman

Here is the Louisburg Sports Zone Athlete of the Week for week twelve of the winter sports season.

Ben Guetterman, Senior, Boys Basketball

Louisburg senior Ben Guetterman had a big week last week and Monday for the Wildcat boys basketball team as he helped them to a sub-state championship and state quarterfinal victory. In the sub-state championship against Iola and the state quarterfinal against Parsons, Guetterman combined to scored 25 points and had 11 rebounds to go along with a team-high seven steals during that stretch. He also finished with seven points and seven rebounds in a sub-state semifinal win over Paola.

On the season, Guetterman is third on the team in scoring as he is averaging 11 points a game and is second on the team in rebounding with nearly five a game.

Here is the Louisburg Sports Zone Athlete of the Week for week eleven of the winter sports season, sponsored by Vohs Pharmacy.

Alyse Moore, Senior, Girls Basketball

Louisburg senior Alyse Moore put together an impressive week that also included a milestone achievement. Moore helped the Lady Cats to a 2-1 record last week as she combined for 35 points, 23 rebounds and six steals in those three games. Included in that was a 14 point and 10 rebound performance in a loss to Shawnee Mission South.

Also in that game, Moore joined an elite club in Louisburg history. She recorded her 500th career rebound against Shawnee Mission South. Moore has played a key role in helping the Lady Cats to the No. 5 ranking in Class 4A and to the No. 1 seed in sub-state.

Weston Guetterman, Senior, Boys Basketball

Louisburg senior point guard Weston Guetterman has helped guide the Wildcat basketball team to a No. 2 state ranking and helped Louisburg to a pair of wins over Eudora and Fort Scott last week. Against Eudora, Guetterman scored 15 points and pulled down six rebounds to go along with five steals on Saturday. Against Fort Scott, Guetterman handed out a team-high six assists to go along with eight points.

For the season, Guetterman has averaged 13 points a game for the Wildcats to go along with four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Aiden Barker, Junior, Wrestling

Louisburg junior Aiden Barker had a career day Friday for the Wildcat wrestling program. Barker, who wrestles at 182 pounds, won the Class 4A regional title with a 3-0 record and earned a spot in the final 16 for the first time. He recorded two pins and then defeated Topeka-Hayden’s Will Devader by a 14-8 decision in the championship match.

Barker seems to be wrestling his best at the right time as he has posted a 25-8 record on the season to go along with 18 pins. Barker and the five other Louisburg sub-state qualifiers helped the Wildcats to a fourth place finish in the team standings at the Jefferson West regional.

Ryan Owens, Senior, Wrestling

Louisburg senior Ryan Owens had a big day for the Wildcats during the Class 4A District Tournament last Saturday at Santa Fe Trail High School. Owens was one of four Wildcats to earn district titles as he went 3-0 at 120 pounds to qualify for the regional round. He recorded two technical falls and defeated Baldwin’s Nakos Benton by a 12-8 decision in the championship.

Owens has had a big season for the Wildcats as the returning state medalist has a 22-4 record to go along with 10 pins and five technical falls. He is also five wins away from 100 career victories.

Cade Holtzen, Senior, Wrestling

Louisburg senior Cade Holtzen is trying for his third state medal in four years and he is certainly off to a good start in doing that. So far this season, Holtzen, who is ranked No. 4 in Class 4A at 132 pounds, is currently 28-1 on the season to go along with 13 pins.

Holtzen also had a nice outing recently for the Wildcat program as he finished last week with a 5-0 record that featured a technical fall and a major decision as he helped Louisburg to a 3-2 dual record.

Michael Seuferling, Junior, Boys Basketball

Louisburg junior Michael Seuferling played a big role in the Wildcats’ second place finish last week at the Baldwin Invitational. Seuferling, along with being assigned to guard the best player on the floor for each of the three games, averaged more than 10 points a game for the Wildcats, including a 17-point performance against Bishop Seabury in the semifinals.

Seuferling was also named to the all-tournament team after recording seven rebounds and nine assists over those three games. Seuferling and the rest of the Wildcats have played well to start 2021 as they are currently ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, despite a buzzer-beating loss to No. 4 Augusta in the championship game.

Madilyn Melton, Senior, Girls Basketball

Louisburg senior Madilyn Melton gave the Lady Cats a big boost last week as she played a large role in helping her team to a pair of wins against Bonner Springs and Baldwin. Against Bonner Springs, Melton led Louisburg with 17 points to go along with three rebounds.

Melton made an impact on both ends of the floor for Louisburg in its win over Baldwin last Friday. Melton scored 12 points and added five rebounds and five blocks in the victory, to go along with four assists and two steals. Those victories moved Louisburg to an 8-0 record on the year and the Lady Cats are currently ranked No. 5 in Class 4A.

Megan Foote, Senior, Girls Basketball

Louisburg senior Megan Foote was a big piece to the Lady Cats’ victory over No. 4 Eudora on Friday. Foote was second on the team in scoring with 12 points and had three 3-pointers. She also finished with a team-high three assists to go along with three rebounds.

It was Foote’s defense that helped lead the way as well. She shadowed all-state player Harper Schriener most of the game, which was key in the Lady Cats’ win.

ALEC YOUNGGREN, WRESTLING, SENIOR

Louisburg senior Alec Younggren has already made a big impact in his first year with the Wildcat wrestling program. Last Saturday, Younggren won the 220-pound division of the Randy Starcher Memorial Tournament in Tonganoxie.

Younggren, who is currently ranked No. 2 in Class 4A at 220 pounds, is currently 12-0 on the season and has recorded nine pins.
