CARSON BUFFINGTON, GIRLS SOCCER, SENIOR

Louisburg senior Carson Buffington has had a good start to her season for the Wildcat girls soccer team. Buffington, who is in her first full year as the team’s starting goalie, has recorded three shutouts to start the year and helped her team to three straight victories. Buffington also has eight saves into those three contests.

The athlete of the week award is announced every Wednesday morning during the spring season and the winner is selected by Louisburg Sports Zone with the help of nominations from coaches.

MACKENZIE SCHOLTZ, GIRLS SOCCER, JUNIOR

Louisburg junior Mackenzie Scholtz had a great start to her season for the LHS girls soccer team last Thursday. Scholtz recorded a hat trick during the Wildcats’ 5-0 season opening win against Harmon at home. She scored those three goals on just eight shots in limited playing time.

BRAYDEN GAGE, BOYS BASKETBALL, SENIOR

Louisburg senior guard Brayden Gage made things difficult for rival Paola last Friday in the Wildcats’ final home game. Gage recorded a team-high eight deflections that turned into four steals, three assists and six points in the Wildcats’ 51-33 win over the Panthers on Senior Night.

BRANDON DOLES, WRESTLING, FRESHMAN

Louisburg freshman Brandon Doles made a big impact for the LHS wrestling team Saturday during the Class 4A regional tournament as he won the championship at 145 pounds. Doles was one of six Wildcat wrestlers to qualify for state and he helped Louisburg to a third-place team finish at regionals.

CADE HOLTZEN, WRESTLING, SOPHOMORE

Louisburg sophomore Cade Holtzen won his first Frontier League championship after he pinned the No. 2 ranked wrestler in Class 5A, Bonner Springs’ Cassius Vanderpool, in the third period of the finals of the league tournament Saturday to improve his record to 28-3 on the season. Holtzen is currently ranked No. 6 in Class 4A.

Louisburg senior Carson Buffington played a big role for the Lady Cats in a week that nearly saw them get two wins. Buffington finished with 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds in Louisburg’s win over Ottawa last Friday and also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds in its two-point loss to Paola. She also tallied six steals between the two games.

Louisburg senior Austin Moore had a big first week back from injury for the Wildcat wrestling team. Moore went 3-0 at the Baldwin Invitational on Saturday and recorded three pins on his way to a title at 220 pounds. He won all three matches in a total mat time of 2:28 and is currently ranked No. 2 in Class 4A.

Louisburg senior Kohl Vogel had a successful week for the Louisburg boys basketball team as he led the Wildcats in scoring in two of their three games during the Baldwin Invitational. He averaged 14 points a game in those three games, including a 22-point, 6 rebound effort against Harmon.

Louisburg sophomore Madilyn Melton gave the Louisburg girls basketball team a nice lift on the road as she helped the Lady Cats to a win over Bonner Springs. BLUE CAPLINGER, WRESTLING, SENIOR

Louisburg senior Blue Caplinger put on a good showing in front of his home fans Saturday during the Wildcat Classic at Louisburg High School. Caplinger, who is ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, went 4-0 on the day and won the 170-pound weight class. He finished the tournament with two pins and a victory over No. 6-ranked Brandon Martin of Piper. Caplinger is currently 19-1 on the season.
